“Pray without ceasing;” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Jesus told a parable in Matthew 13 of a man who sowed good seeds in his farm but an enemy came and sowed tares. According to Him, that happened because ‘men slept’. If men were awake, they would have seen when the enemy came with the tares and they would have stopped him. Nothing happens for a person who is asleep. Instead, people with evil intentions will have a field day just because the person is asleep. The first thing for a sleeping person to do is to wake up. In previous months, we learnt a lot about the need for the church to wake up, the church being you and me. Isaiah 52:1 says, “Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.” Your favour can be stolen, hidden or diverted if you don’t wake up. It is time to wake up and stop the enemy in his tracks.
One area you need to wake up is in the place of prayer. When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane, “and he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). He was alarmed that they could not pray. The prayer was not for Him but for them to be able to overcome the temptation of the times. Their prayerlessness resulted in their dispersion after Jesus was arrested. “Then all the disciples left him, and fled.” (Vs 56). When you refuse to pray, you will constantly be on the run from problems and circumstances. How far can you run when evil is everywhere? Jesus stood boldly because He had prayed fervently. The earlier you wake up to prayer, the better for you. The prayer other people pray for you has a limit of functionality. It is the prayer you engage in yourself that builds your spirit man, makes you able to perceive the plans of the enemy and resist accordingly. Don’t say the prayer you made yesterday will carry you today, or the 30 days prayer and fasting you embarked upon last month will cover you this month. This is an error! As attacks are new every day, prayer should also be constant. In that scripture, Jesus told us the least length of time for prayer every day. He said ‘at least one hour’. If you don’t pray up to an hour every day, then you need to buckle up. When your prayer changes, your life changes.
Matthew 13, 26
I was about leaving for work one morning and turned on the ignition of my car. It did not respond. I tried everything I knew how but it still did not start. I remembered testimonies of the blood and oil. I got mine, sprinkled them on the car and decreed that it must start. I turned on the ignition and it responded and I drove to work. Praise God!
